The Official Declaration: A New Symbol for Nepal

On April 12, 2024 (Chaitra 30, 2080 BS), the Government of Nepal officially declared the Mandarin Orange (Suntala) as the national fruit of Nepal. This landmark decision by the Council of Ministers followed a proposal from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, aiming to promote local branding and boost the citrus economy.

Why the Orange? Unlike other fruits, the Mandarin Orange thrives specifically in the Himalayan mid-hills (1,000m to 1,500m), making it a unique geographical representative of Nepal's diverse climate.
